External use ceilings are not only for complete external use but also for areas with increased performance requirements, such as underground stations. For ceiling manufacturers they are especially challenging as they have to be designed according to the prevailing wind pressure and loading requirements in conjunction with the project specific structural requirements. The performance values of the sub-structure and the ceiling tiles are dependant on wind pressure and wind load, as outlined by the architect and are controlled with a material-related, structural calculation. From this arise the required material strength and the required construction of the sub-structure.

In external areas, due to concerns arising from the demanding weather conditions, ceilings should be supplied with corrosion protection conforming to DIN standards.
